Apparently named to coincide with “The comet of the century” (c/2012 S1) and the reindeer. To say I was excited to try this new offering from Epic, is a slight understatement. There was a bit of hype surrounding the sourcing of the US hops for the comet – something to do with rare or new hops?? And come sort of waiting list as long as your proverbial to get your hands on ’em.
On the side of the bottle they quip that the beer, like the actual comet, has the chance to either sizzle of fizzle and to me, I’m afraid, it was the latter. It’s super bitter and really just tasted like liquid hop. It had a comet tail of bitter after taste too and really that’s all I could really tell on this one. At least all those hops left a lovely aroma. Pity for me that it didn’t have a lovely taste.
The Pet Expert, however, thinks exactly the opposite to me. He’s all over the aroma, the big hoppy bitter punch, the complete lack of anything else to describe it.
At 6.2% it’s not going to pop your clogs too quickly, so if you can deal with the bitter flavour bomb, you could indeed enjoy it through the night. Not unlike any comet worth its salt.
